Affiliate Marketing Strategies #1 – Affiliate Product Selection

I’m often asked: What’s the secret to a full-time income with affiliate marketing?

My answer is Product Selection.

Really, your choice in a market and what you promote will be the difference between a little bit of money and a six-figure income.

So yeah…product selection is kind of a big deal. But you need to do more than scan an affiliate network and look for a “best seller.”

Your goal is to promote a product that is these three things:

1. In a market that you find personally interesting
2. Helps people solve their problems
3. Pays a sizable affiliate commission.

There’s a lot more that goes into product selection.

In fact, this entire section covers my “best practices” on this subject…

The Niche is Everything

Let’s start with simple clarification:

I believe there are two types of affiliate websites.

The first is the Authority Site where you build an audience around a tightly focused topic. You will only have time to concentrate on one (maybe two) authority sites because your goal is to build a fiercely loyal following.

The second is the Niche Site where you build a series of small mini-sites (or pages.) You don’t worry about building a following. Instead all you care about is to get people to take action on an affiliate offer.

My point is this… The amount of time you spend on niche selection depends on whether you’re building an authority site or a niche site.

With a niche site you don’t have to obsess over the right market. A wrong decision only means you’ve wasted a little bit of time and money.

But a bad choice with an authority website results in wasted months or even years of your time.

To get started, you should pick a niche that has some competition…but not TOO much.

Competition means there IS money being made in this market. This shows there is potential for you to do the same.

My advice is to tightly focus on a small topic. You have to find a topic that’s profitable without having too much competition.

For instance, let’s say you enjoy talking about finance. In all likelihood, you’d get creamed if you opened up a personal finance website.

But you’d do well if you created a site for personal finance for female entrepreneurs.

See the difference between the two?

Take time to think about picking the right niche. This will be the difference between making a little bit or a whole lot of money.
